Lakefront property owners have long talked about their "best-kept secrets," being their weekend cottages where their families enjoyed the quiet solitude of fishing, boating and sunbathing. Now, the "secrets" are out and the concerns of excessive lake pressure have captured the attention of citizens, the Lakes Councils of LaGrange and nearby Steuben counties, the Department of Natural Resources and the Indiana legislature. The shortage of lakefront properties has caused developers to find unique and imaginative ways to answer the demand for access to Indiana's beautiful recreational freshwater lakes. In "funneling", a lakefront property is purchased to provide access for (or "funnel") boats and lake users to the lake from a developed acreage nearby (but off the lake). The overuse of the lake by people and boats can have a serious effect on the lake ecosystem. The LaGrange County Lakes Council partnered with the Steuben County Lakes Council to study boating on area lakes in summer 2005. The 2006 report "Full to Overflowing" notes that funneling is a particular concern for many lakes which are approaching or exceeding their carrying capacities. |
